Highlights
The Market Cross, which isn't a 'cross', situated near the Salutation Hotel in the centre of town will be the starting point for this guided walk of Ambleside with a local and professional tourist guide. Weaving our way through time we uncover not just its 600 year milling history but you will also learn of the special connections the town has with William Wordsworth and sculptor Josefina de Vasconcellos and see the places associated with them. Artist Kurt Schwitters, educationalist Charlotte Mason and Victorian journalist Harriet Martineau all decided to set up home here. John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and the Armitt Sisters had their part to play too in Ambleside's history. Find out more about the quirky Bridge House, "old" Ambleside and discover who was "Kelsick" and his incredible 300 year legacy and what is Rushbearing.
Allow 90 minutes for the walk which will be just over a mile in length. Please be aware there are some steep streets and narrow pavements and indeed some sections where there is two-way traffic but no pavements.
Longer walks taking in the Roman fort or the waterfalls can be arranged separately if desired.
Subject to services, concerts or meetings, if public access is available we may go inside St Mary's Church and suggest a minimum £3 donation is made separately at the time.
This adventure is perfect for individuals and small groups, and can be tailored for:
